World News - Lockerbie bomber al-Megrahi dies in Libya after long ...

NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Updated at 3:30 p.m. ET: TRIPOLI - The former Libyan intelligence?officer convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270?people has died, his son told NBC News on Sunday. He was 60.

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi died at home after his health quickly deteriorated. "He has been suffering from cancer for a long time and God choose him," Khalid al-Magrahi told NBC.

"He was too sick to utter anything on his death bed,"?his brother?Abdel Hakim told Reuters. "Just because Abdel Baset is dead doesn't mean the past is now erased. We will always tell the world that my brother was innocent.''

Al-Megrahi was convicted in 2001 of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 as it flew to New York from London. All 259 people aboard the airliner were killed and 11 others on the ground in the town of Lockerbie, Scotland, died from falling wreckage.

Scotland?freed him in 2009 on compassionate grounds because he was suffering from advanced terminal prostate cancer and thought to have months to live.?

Convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi speaks during an interview at his home in Tripoli on Oct. 3, 2011. He was transferred to hospital on April 13, 2012 after his health deteriorated quickly.

His release angered many relatives of the victims, 189 of whom were American, and the Obama administration criticized the decision.

Many speculated that a backdoor deal had been cut between the former regime of Moammar Gadhafi and the British government. With the fall of the Gadhafi regime in 2011, many in the U.S. and U.K. called on the new Libyan leaders to extradite Megrahi to serve out the remainder of his prison term, something Libya's ruling National Transitional Council refused?to do.

Lockerbie relatives: 'Never thought this day would come'

The family of convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi tell NBC News that he is in a coma, without medicine and near death. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

Al-Megrahi, who served as an intelligence agent during the rule of Gadhafi, denied any role in suspected human rights abuses in his home country before Gadhafi's fall and death in a popular uprising last year.?

In April, al-Megrahi's condition worsened and he was taken to a private hospital to receive a transfusion of eleven liters of blood, but subsequently felt strong enough to return home.?

Megrahi's older brother, Mohamed, said the funeral will be after the noon prayer?on Monday.?He will be buried in Al Zagawani cemetary in Janzour,?12 miles west of Tripoli. Megrahi's house?was filled Sunday with family members, relatives and neighbors paying condolences, NBC News reported.

The White House said that the death would not end the quest for justice for the families of the 270 people killed.

"Megrahi's death concludes an unfortunate chapter following his release from prison in 2009 on medical grounds - a move we strongly opposed,'' said White House National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor.

"We want to see justice for the victims of the Lockerbie bombing and their families. We will continue working with our new partners in Libya toward a full accounting of Gadhafi's horrific acts,'' Vietor said.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer on Sunday criticized the Scottish government for allowing al-Megrahi to die a free man in what he said "smelled of a deal for oil.''

Schumer, a New York Democrat, said on CNN that the death of al-Megrahi meant the full truth about the Pan Am bombing may never be known.

"Both the Scottish and British governments have not been forthcoming,'' Schumer said. "The whole deal smelled of a deal for oil for this man's freedom and that was almost blasphemy given what a horrible person he was and the terrible destruction and tragedy that he caused. I don't know if we'll ever get to the bottom of it now.''

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was in opposition when al-Megrahi was freed, said in Chicago, where he was attending the NATO summit: "I've always been clear he should never have been released from prison.

''Today is a day to remember the 270 people who lost their lives in what was an appalling terrorist act. Our thoughts should be with them and their families for the suffering they've had."

Jim Swire, the father of one of the British Lockerbie victims, said he was convinced al-Megrahi was innocent.

''I've been satisfied for some years that this man had nothing to do with the murder of my daughter and I grit my teeth every time I hear newscasters say 'Lockerbie bomber has died,'" he told BBC News television. ''This is a sad day."

Be bold when you are stating your views. Most writers that are working with article marketing believe their articles just need to simply inform and nothing else. Do not believe this. Yes, you want your articles to inform and to teach. Straightforward educational articles, however, are boring and people won?t read more than one or two of them. Every now and then it?s good to put in your own thoughts about what you are writing. Your readers will appreciate that you open up to them that way. It will also help them decide whether or not they like you enough to buy from or hire you.

Keep your articles interesting and chatty. Internet Marketers often keep the thrills and frills out of their initial articles. The best approach is a lighthearted one. Your readers should sense that you are speaking directly to them. You don?t want them to think you?re talking at them. Do not confuse condescending and conversational. If you are unsure about the message you are sending; you should have a friend or family member proofread it before it is submitted. You do not want to lose potential customers! Going Here Every article that you write needs to have the most important information at the start, not the end. The best information should be at the front, and this should dwindle down to not so important points. This is because people typically do not read whole articles in one sitting. You want the best stuff up front. The article reader does too. When they have to search for what?s important they get bored and move on to something else. Instead of having to work hard to find the information they need, your article will provide it upfront ? this will impress the reader which is what you want to have transpire. {You need not blow article writing out of proportion. With the impact of composing your own articles, the greater you will have the ability to succeed You will get positive results if you just hang in there. N.C. braces for 'Hunger Games' impact

Murray Close / AP

By Dane Huffman, NBC17.com

From waterfalls near Hendersonville to abandoned buildings in Shelby, North Carolina expects major exposure ? and long-term impact ? from the unveiling of ?The Hunger Games? film this weekend.

The film, which opens Friday, was shot entirely in North Carolina ? ?every frame,? Aaron Syrett, director of the North Carolina Film Office, said with pride.

In the near future, North American society has collapsed, and citizens are forced to watch, and participate in games where young players fight to the death.

The impact of the film could be far-reaching. The books, by Suzanne Collins, have sold millions of copies.? Syrett said Lionsgate Films has an ?incredible? marketing campaign behind the film.

?You can?t buy a billboard this large,? Syrett said Wednesday. ?It will have a tremendous tourism impact for years to come.?

This article, "North Carolina braces for 'Hunger Games' impact," originally appeared on NBC17.com.

The film used more than 4,000 extras, all of them from North Carolina, and also had a crew of around 500, the majority of them coming from the state.

The film is about a post-apocalypse society in which the Capitol demands tribute from the surrounding regions by having one boy and one girl compete in the Hunger Games. The games are nationally televised, and only one teen survives.

The filmmakers needed run-down buildings and warehouses for the dark film, and found them in such places as Shelby.

Margo Metzger / AP

Scenes from "'The Hunger Games" were shot at the abandoned Henry River Mill Village in Hildebran, N.C. The house on the left was outfitted as the Everdeens' home in the Seam, part of District 12 in fictional Panem.

"It was a mill town with company houses and all that that we were able to shoot in. That was quite a lucky find," director Gary Ross told NBC.

Shelby became ?District 12,? the home of several of the film?s main characters. Shelby officials expect tourists to visit just to see places the film used.

Other areas in western North Carolina became essential to the film as well. ?The Hunger Games? was shot at an abandoned cigarette factory around Charlotte. Another scene was shot at Triple Falls, a popular waterfall at DuPont State Forest near Brevard.

Syrett said North Carolina already has 10-15 films either in preparation, shooting or wrapping up now. And ?The Hunger Games? will help the state continue to attract the movie industry.

?It?s really a small industry,? Syrett said. ?Everybody knows everyone and they talk. This will be the main topic in Los Angeles for the next few weeks.

?And we?ve done a good job of letting people know it was shot in North Carolina. We certainly have seen a volume of level of interest in North Carolina rise in the past year or so because of it.?

But, he said, ?I think Monday will busy day for us.?

And right after ?The Hunger Games,? another blockbuster is ahead. Syrett said ?Iron Man 3? is in prepping mode now, and shooting will begin soon.

Any hints on where? The Triangle, perhaps?

?I can?t say right now,? he said.

'Walking Dead' Producers Preview Season Three

'You haven't seen anything yet,' Robert Kirkman tells MTV News about show's future.
By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner

"We're all infected," former cop Rick Grimes told his fellow group of survivors in the "Walking Dead" season finale — and boy, is that an understatement.

In an action-packed episode that killed off multiple characters in brutal fashion, left the divisive farm completely in ruins, introduced a fan-favorite sword-wielding wanderer and teased the promise of a prison to come, it's safe to say that the "Walking Dead" season two finale left fans feverish for more.

The AMC zombie series, which returns for its third season in October, answered long-term mythological questions (The content of the CDC's Dr. Jenner's whisper? No longer a secret!) and pushed the characters into new places, both physically and emotionally. Perhaps most importantly for fans of the comic books, "The Walking Dead" has left the farm behind, with the prison very much in the near future.

Between that change of scenery and the introduction of iconic character Michonne (with chained zombies in tow no less), season three is shaping up to be the best of the lot — a notion that executive producers Glen Mazzara and Robert Kirkman certainly agree with, of course.

"When I think of 'The Walking Dead' book, I think about the prison. I think about the Governor. I think about Rick. I think about Michonne. That, to me, is the heart of that story," Mazzara told MTV News about the future of the survival horror series. "That's what I'm excited about writing and seeing come to life. I think that this has been a great chapter one. But now we're moving into our best material. I'm really excited to see what the actors, the writers and the directors can do with that material."

Kirkman, who created the comic books upon which the TV show is based, is equally excited, if not more so, to revisit "the best material" of the original "Walking Dead" story.

"When the camera rises over the trees and the prison comes into view, I did get a little choked up," Kirkman confessed. "It's a really cool, very bold promise to the audience. To show that and to say, just wait until you see what we're going to do with season three. I'm intimately involved with this show. So knowing what we've already discussed and knowing the different things that we want to do, I can say that we are at the very beginning of this show. We haven't quite gotten to a lot of the big things we've been building to just yet. If you're a big fan of 'The Walking Dead' and you enjoyed season one and season two, then you haven't seen anything yet."

"We're just getting started," Mazzara agreed. After the season two finale, we're inclined to agree.

What did you think of the "Walking Dead" season finale? Are you looking forward to what comes next in season three? Tell us what you think in the comments section!

'Desperate Housewives' case set to go to jury

Nick Ut / AP

The jury will have to decide whether they believe Nicollette Sheridan's version of events at "Desperate Housewives," or Marc Cherry's.

By Alex Ben Block, The Hollywood Reporter

Closing arguments Wednesday in the "Desperate Housewives" trial posed a direct challenge to the jury: Who do you believe?

Nicollette Sheridan is asking jurors to believe her emotional argument that "Housewives" producer Marc Cherry, ABC and Touchstone Television conspired to kill off her character after she complained about a September 2008 altercation with Cherry on the set. Sheridan lawyer Mark Baute asked the jury to award her at least $5.76 million for lost pay from season six of the show plus interest.

ABC, on the other hand, is asking the jury to take the word of several witnesses who repeatedly said the decision to kill off Sheridan was made in May 2008, months before the Cherry/Sheridan incident. The network argues Sheridan should get nothing.

PHOTOS: Crazy cases! 18 of Hollywood's outrageous entertainment lawsuits

Sheridan attorney Baute made his closing statement first Wednesday, hammering home his theory that Disney, ABC, Cherry and at least nine other witnesses for the defense were part of a conspiracy to ignore what happened to the actress and protect the billion-dollar business of the hit television show.
?
"Everyone at Touchstone was in the loop helping orchestrate the record," Baute told the jury. "They got together to create a record of justifiable firing."

Defense attorney Adam Levin took a much less emotional approach. He systematically laid out the evidence that was presented and the credibility of his 10 witnesses.
?
?Marc Cherry told you they talked about killing off Edie as early as in season three,? said Levin, adding that it was only in season five that he was given permission to end the character?s story arc for ?creative reasons? in order to ?shock and surprise the audience and increase viewership and revenue (from higher ratings).
?
Throughout the trial, Baute has been developing the conspiracy theory. Disney and Touchstone, said Baute, are ?not interested if a woman gets hit as long as it keeps a billion-dollar business going.?
?
Baute went through his witnesses? testimony. He cited an expert who testified that it was highly unusual to kill off a character. He said ABC's move of bringing in actor James Denton and then revealing that Denton's character was about to be killed off proved nothing because "Housewives" is in its final season, and even on "The Sopranos," characters were killed in the final episodes.
?
Baute spent a lot of time talking about what he called the lack of credibility from defense witnesses. He said Sabrina Wind, who is Cherry?s business partner, said, ?I don?t recall? 46 times during her testimony, but when it came to the story Baute said she was coached to tell, she ?sang like a bird.?
?
Baute insisted the only decision made by Touchstone and the ABC network in May 2008 was to jump the plot of the show ahead five years. Otherwise, everything else was subject to change -- especially the fate of the Sheridan character. He said if they really planned to get rid of Sheridan, they would not have renewed her contract for the fifth season and would not have further vested her in profit-sharing from the entire series. ?It?s a story,? said Baute. ?It?s not the truth.?
?
The attorney added that when Sheridan was hit in the head, she reported the incident to the appropriate person -- the line producer on the show -- and her attorney brought it to the attention of ABC's business affairs department. He said ABC policy is to initiate a quick and thorough investigation of any such incident, but it did not do so in this case. The HR investigation only began at the end of October, when ABC executive Mark Pedowtiz saw an article about the incident in the National Enquirer, and the HR person never interviewed Cherry or Sheridan.
?
Baute said repeatedly that a memo written by Cherry?s assistant at the time -- which said the incident had been minor, Cherry had apologized and Sheridan had accepted his apology -- was actually written by Cherry. He pointed out that the assistant wasn?t even present when Sheridan and Cherry met after the altercation, but the statement includes details of the interaction.
?
The point, Baute argued, is that the assistant and others on the "Housewives" payroll wanted to be able to tell Cherry, ?Don?t worry, everyone agrees with your version of events, boss man,? Baute said.
?
Sheridan?s attorney said the February 2009 meeting where she was told her character would be killed off was prepared in advance and staged. Baute said the decision to kill the Edie Britt character in three different ways -- choking, car accident and electrocution -- was another way Cherry was punishing Sheridan through Edie.
?
As for why Sheridan went back to work right after she was hit in the head and why she appeared in a subsequent episode after being fired, Baute said, ?If you?re a 45-year-old actress making that kind of money and he?s the boss, you don?t turn back. You go back to work.?
?
Baute argued that even though ABC presented testimony that Sheridan was late for work half the time and was unprofessional, there were no memos or HR reports or personnel charts to back up any of that testimony.

As for the overwhelming number of defense witnesses, Baute said as the judge had pointed out ?one or two quality witness are more important than five or more spinning.?
?
Levin, in his closing, was much more calculated and stuck to the evidence. He said five of the 10 witnesses who testified that the decision to kill off Sheridan was made in May 2008 no longer work for ABC or Cherry and thus have no reason to lie. He said Cherry had thought long and hard about killing off Edie Britt, pointing out that he tried to do so in season three, but Pedowitz would not give him permission. He finally got that permission for season five.
?
Levin pointed to writers' assistant notes shown during the trial that point out there was discussion about killing off Edie. Levin said, ?No evidence (was presented that) the notes were fabricated or falsified.?
?
The ABC lawyer also said there was testimony that big decisions like killing off a character can be made in small The CW, ?has no incentive to help out his competitor and to look you (the jury) in the eye and commit perjury.?
?
Levin said Sheridan is relying on two witnesses, writers Lori Baker and Jeff Greenstein, for much of her case. And he said Greenstein often contradicted Baker with his testimony.
?
He pointed out Baker had said when she left "Housewives" she considered her own lawsuit against Cherry and the show, which he said showed she was angry with him, even though she would not admit that on the stand.

Jury deliberations likely will begin in earnest Thursday. A verdict requires only 9 of the 12 jurors to agree.
